The MareFrame project seeked to remove barriers preventing the wider adoption of an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management. This entailed developing new tools and technologies, creating and extending ecosystem models and assessment methods, and building a decision-support framework capable of highlighting alternatives and their consequences—all in close collaboration with stakeholders through co-creation processes. MareFrame’s vision was to significantly increase the use of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) and to provide advice regarding European fish stocks.
The project’s overarching goal was to overcome obstacles—a process that relies not only on general stakeholder collaboration but also on close integration and co-creation with relevant parties throughout the development stages, ensuring shared ownership and facilitating the effective dissemination of project results.
